Here are the rules of the road in regard to seat belts

In a nutshell…

  • The driver is responsible for ensuring that all occupants are wearing seat belts that have been fitted to the vehicle.
    • The driver is not required to wear a seat belt while reversing.
  • If seat belts have been removed, the vehicle is not allowed to be driven on a public road.
  • If there is no seat belt on the front passenger seat, children up to the age of 14 must sit on the back seat.
  • A passenger is not allowed to occupy a seat without a seat belt (i.e. none was ever fitted) if there is a seat vacant with a seat belt fitted.
